Economic vs non-economic damages

There are two broad categories of damages that you will have to explore — economic and non-economic. Within each of these categories, there are specific types of damages that you can look into.

Economic damages include those that have a specific monetary amount attached. This can include the money you missed because you were unable to work and the money that it cost for you to get the medical care that you need because of the injury.

Non-economic damages are those that don’t have a specific monetary amount attached. Instead, you have to use certain points to determine the amount to seek for each type of damage. These can include pain and suffering, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, emotional distress, and potentially shortened lifespan. Other types of non-economic damages can also occur.
