Distracted Driving Takes A Life

A 24-year-old student was thrown from her vehicle and killed in the accident. She had been going to the University of South Alabama, studying to be a vet tech, and would have graduated in a few weeks.

A witness to the crash said she spotted the truck coming up behind her at a high rate of speed. Riding with her husband, she told him they were about to be hit. However, the driver swerved to miss them, going into the oncoming lanes and hitting the student’s car.

He did not fully miss the stopped car that the woman was in, striking the back of it before he swerved, but the oncoming vehicle took the brunt of the impact.

The defense has claimed that he was not driving recklessly. They admitted that the incident was tragic, but claimed it was only an accident.

Cell Phone Activity Matters In A Distracted Driving Case

However, the prosecution has said the man was basically looking at nothing but his cellphone. He spent time on Facebook and on a dating site. He also used as many as seven different applications. While driving, he looked at social media profiles for 45 different women. On top of that, he made phone calls and both read and wrote text messages.

The cell activity happened for roughly 75 minutes before the crash. The man is now being charged with manslaughter.
