Rear seat-belt usage too low, putting people at risk of injuries

Using seat belts can save lives; the facts and statistics prove that. Still, despite that knowledge, there are many people who get into vehicles and ride in the back seats without wearing one. Interestingly, the state laws don’t force all people to be buckled in, so a fatality caused by a lack of a seat belt won’t actually be due to a neglectful act.

Back seat safety

Some may believe that the rear seats are safe without a belt, since there are seats in front of them. The fact is that there were 883 unrestrained rear-seat passenger fatalities in 2013, including children from the age of 8 up. Why do some still get into the back seat untethered?

Some states don’t have rear seat-belt laws. In Alabama, for instance, the only passengers who have to be bucked in are those in the front of the vehicle. The American Automobile Association reports that around 42 million people in the United States will be traveling at least 50 miles from home over for Thanksgiving; with that in mind, there’s a potential for around 400 traffic fatalities nationwide, just due to a lack of rear seat belt usage.

In crashes that involve a fatality, only around 60 percent of rear-seat passengers were wearing a seat belt. That’s a shockingly low number, and it shows how quickly injuries can take place without the proper restraints.

Seat Belt Use Prevents Car Accidents

As you prepare for the holiday ahead of you, remember that people may be drinking and driving, speeding and being negligent on the roads. If buckling up can protect you, it’s an easy step to take to prevent fatalities.
