This weekend is Memorial Day weekend. One recreational activity that many Alabamans will be engaging in this holiday weekend is boating. When out boating, it is not only important to have a fun time, but also to have a safe time.
Recently, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency gave some safety tips for Memorial Day weekend and the summer. Among these safety tips were some tips for safe boating.

Safety tips for safe boating
- One is to make sure to stay focused when operating a boat. It is very important for a boater to keep their mind on the task at hand, as this can help considerably with accident avoidance.
- A related tip that the ALEA gave is to stay off of one’s cellphone when operating a boat. Talking on the phone or texting while boating can cause a boater’s attention to dangerously stray away from where it should be: on boating safely.
- Another tip given by the ALEA is to stay away from operating a boat when one is intoxicated as a result of alcohol or drugs. When a person boats while intoxicated, they could be putting themselves, the passengers in their boat and other individuals on the waters in danger.
- Additionally, the ALEA gave a reminder of the importance of wearing a life jacket when aboard a boat.
