Alabama traffic accident statistics and projections
[/fusion_title][fusion_text]
Traffic safety observers can make decisions about new legislation and revisions based upon motor vehicle crash histories. Statistics show how often car accidents happen and reveal circumstances surrounding collisions.
More than 128,300 traffic accidents were reported in Alabama in 2012, about one every four minutes. Car accident victims were injured approximately every 13 minutes and died on the average of every 10 hours and 15 minutes. Eight hundred seventy people lost their lives in statewide traffic accidents that year and more than 40,200 people suffered injuries.

Many injuries and deaths caused by motor vehicle accidents are preventable.
Fifty-nine percent of Alabama accident victims killed in 2012 were not wearing safety restraints. The risks of dying in a traffic collision are 50 times greater for unrestrained front seat occupants than individuals wearing seat belts.
As you may have guessed, the greatest number — 76 percent — of state accidents in 2012 occurred in cities. It may be a surprise to learn 56 percent of fatal crashes happened on rural roads. The number of 2012 fatalities included 80 pedestrians, nine bicyclists and 92 moped riders or motorcyclists.
By analyzing and combining these factors, health and safety officials were able to project the likelihood of Alabama drivers being involved in accidents during their lifetimes. The chance of being in any crash is 98 percent. More than one in three state drivers will be involved in an injury accident or fatality.
One year’s accident statistics aren’t very revealing until you compare them to the numbers accumulated over time. Between 2003 and 2012, the number of traffic accidents, injuries and deaths declined significantly although the economic losses tied to those crashes rose nearly 24 percent.
